This position serves as a first line supervisor of a Wildland Firefighter Type 2 IA HandCrew. The primary responsibility is for leadership of highly effective wildland fire suppression and wildland urban interface/intermix situations.

PERMANENT OPEN CONTINUOUS RECRUITMENT: This is a continuously open vacancy announcement for one or more locations throughout the Forest Service. The number and location of positions to be filled will be dependent upon individual unit needs. These are permanent positions with varying tours of duty and may include weekend work. Some positions may have irregular and protracted hours of work. Tours of duty include full-time or less than full-time (guaranteed minimum 13 pay periods full-time employment). Positions may be filled as career ladders or could be filled at the full performance level dependent upon the individual units needs. Availability of government housing, federal day care facilities, and bargaining unit status will vary by location.

Responsible for directing a module of a 10 to 20 person Handcrew. Recognizes, reacts to and communicates changes in predicted weather and fire behavior, topography and fuel types, and adapts planned strategies and tactics to identify and relocate firelines, escape routes and safety zones. Performs in other assignments on incidents involving wildland urban interface. Plans and implements work activities such as setting priorities, identifying objectives, coordinating resources, vehicles, supplies and equipment, developing job hazard analysis, and conducting job skill training. Assigns resources, conducts safety meetings, monitors work quality and quantity, tracks budget expenditures, and reports work progress and project accomplishments. Develop, implement and executes prescribed burn plans.
Performs wildlife suppression support as directed within training and physical and other duties as assigned. Duties listed are at the full performance level. **ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:**
Must be 18 years of age.
May be subject to satisfactory completion of one year probationary or trial period.
Initial appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of training.
Subject to one-year supervisory/managerial probation period (unless prior service is creditable).New USDA supervisors must successfully complete all components of the required new supervisor training program before the end of their probationary period.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
WORK CAPACITY TEST (WCT) for Wildland Firefighters: This position participates in wildland firefighting activities. Based on the type of work performed, TAKING and PASSING the WCT at the ARDUOUS level is a "condition of employment." The Arduous fitness (Pack) test requires completing a three (3) mile hike within forty-five (45) minutes, while carrying a forty-five (45) pound pack. You are strongly encouraged to consult with your physician and begin training immediately if applying for this position.
