I tried lowering the action on my own, but a high fret and a high and unfiled nut prevented me from going any further. For some things, you really need a professional who has the right tools and experience. Mike evened out and polished the high frets, took the nut down a little, and lowered the action without any fret buzz. It's so much more comfortable to play now, and sounds fantastic. The price for the service was competitive with other luthiers in the area, and turnaround time was about half a day. Couldn't be happier! I found Mike Carroll through his web site (www.carrollguitars.net) - Carroll Guitars. I had received a "trashed" Gibson SG that had belonged to a nephew's father who had passed away. He asked me if I could help to get it restored as it had great sentimental value to him. This SG had many missing parts, surface cracks on the face, many scratches on the body and neck, several deep gouges, a lot of buckle rash on the back, as well as missing wood where the neck had been reattached after being broken off close to the body. I met with Mike, explained what I was trying to accomplish, and he took on the project. The fact that Mike was willing to take on this project was a big surprise to me as his main business is building some of the finest custom guitars that I have ever seen. What I received back far exceeded my wildest dreams as to how this old SG could look and play. Frankly, you need to look at this SG closely to see that it isn't a relatively new guitar. Mike also did all of the reassembly (new pickups, internal electronics, etc.) and setup work, and it just plays and sounds great. I had discussed this project with several luthiers locally and across the US before selecting Mike for the project. Some would not consider taking on the project, others obviously just did not have the skill to do what I wanted. I found Mike Carroll to be very easy to do business with. He listened carefully to what I wanted out of the project, gave me great advice as to how we should proceed, and then gave me back something that just blew me away at a price point that was very reasonable. Mike is a genuine master luthier who is among the best-of-the-best that I have ever met. My new goal is to have Mike build me one of his customs; now that would be a real treat. You cannot go wrong with Mike Carroll as there are few luthiers (anywhere) who have the skill and ability to build or restore musical instruments as well as he can! On top of that, when the project is finished you feel like you have made a real friend who you can always turn to to maintain your prized instruments, or perhaps build you a new one. I took my Gibson Dove in Flight to Michael Carroll in a very sad condition. After having sent it to the Gibson factory in Nashville TN. four ( yes 4) times with such horendous results that I had all but given up hope of ever having of it ever being right again. I told Michael I was in no hurry and alI I wanted was my baby back in the best shape he could and he said he would do everything he could to repair the terrible refinishing job on the headstock. Well my baby's back home and it looks as good as it did when I purchased it new from Boseman MT in xxxx. He even repaired some dings in the top and polished it to a wonderful glow. I toured Mike's shop the day I took my Guitar in and was very impressed with his facilities. We spoke on the phone many times and Mike kept me up to date with his progress with pictures. It is a pleasure to have my own personal luthier with whom I would trust any of my repair work. I believe in supporting local businesses and Mike is a professional.......easy to communicate with and very fair priced for the quality of work he provides. My experience with Carroll Guitars is excellant . I recomend Carroll Guitars to all my friends . Amazing work!!! Mike did the impossible! Very professional, kind, and reasonable. I would highly recommend Carroll guitars to anyone! I found a xxxx T Haruo dreadnought and it was in pretty bad shape. The top was pitted, scraped and gouged and the bottom had been been crunched....talked to Mike over the phone and he said bring it over. I did and we went through the guitar completely. I then left the guitar with him and he just took it from there...he would send me pictures through out the process and I couldn't believe what he was doing....when he was finished, he had done an amazing job and probably increased the value of the guitar by twice what I paid for it, but that wasn't what I wanted done. He made the guitar a 'player' again and I couldn't believe how beautiful the guitar looks and plays. He simply did an incredible job! I took my well-worn 16 year old Washburn Craig Chaquico EA-26 to Mike after another luthier botched up replacing worn frets. Mike's attention to detail and craftsmen expertise restored the guitar to near-new condition and at an extremely reasonable price. The turn-around time was only three days. I have two more guitars that need attention and they're going to go to Mike as well. I have extreme confidence in Mike's ability and do not hesitate to recommend his services.
